THE ISLANDED SUBSTATION
Excess solar power in the area that a substation supplies, feeds back to the substation to be stored. I'ts like your computer and the internet. The SMART GRID is the Internet of Electricity. Your rooftop solar feeds daytime surplus energy into a battery "server" at the substation and you can get it back when you come home from work. If there is more power generated than used, the substation can be "islanded", which means disconnecting from central power plant and operate on its resources within the substation.
